Frequently Asked Questions

About the Admissions Process

Here are the questions we hear most often about the admissions process:

  • Is there space available?

Our Prima program of children ages 20 months to 36 months is a small community and fills up very fast.  We encourage families to tour and apply early for our Children's House classrooms, as we often fill all of our spots prior to the school year.

We generally have more openings for our elementary program, ages 1-6. Previous Montessori experience is always a benefit. We offer rolloing enrollment for all of our programs pending space. Please inquire for the most up to date information.

  • Is there a waiting list?

Yes, normally, depending on the program we operate from a waiting pool of students that have an application on file and have submitted an application fee.

  • May I visit?

We offer in-person tours of our beautiful school and programs.  These tours are designed for small groups of parents who would like to learn more about our programs.

    Information covered includes:

What our classrooms look like (including class sizes and materials)

Who makes up our wonderful, dedicated staff

Why the “Montessori Method” leads to a lifelong love of learning

    How we make it work!

Tours run an average of 60 minutes, with time for questions and answers at the end.

  • Who should attend the school tour?

Both parents (if applicable & possible). The initial tour is for adults only; your child will have an opportunity to visit the classroom and the teacher at a later date.

  • Is previous Montessori experience required?

Previous Montessori experience is not necessary for admission for children entering at 20 months to 4 years old. It is recommended for children who are 5 and older, but it is not always necessary. In all admission decisions we carefully consider each child's unique background before determining admission and placement.

  • Do you offer a kindergarten program?

Not in the traditional sense. The Children's House program is for children aged 3 to 6. The final year of this three-year program serves students of the same age as a traditional kindergarten class.

  • Do you offer after school care?

Depending on the age of your child, we offer flexible before and after care. More information can be found here.

  • Do you offer a summer program?

Yes. We offer 8 consecutive weeks in the summer of care, that families can partake in according to their needs. Please find more information here.

  • Do you have a foreign language program?

Yes. North Shore Montessori School offers Spanish exposure beginning in our Children's House program at age 3 and extending into Elementary. In addition to studying the Spanish language, the curriculum is also supplemented with Spanish culture, history, and food.

  • How well do children transition to a traditional school after attending NSMS?

Moving from a Montessori school to another school setting is a question often raised by parents and family members. The habits and skills a child develops at North Shore Montessori School last a lifetime and students are well prepared no matter where they go. Montessori children tend to be adaptable, working well individually, or in a group. They have solid decision-making skills, practical problem solving abilities, and learn to manage their time well. Since children in a Montessori classroom are also encouraged to share ideas and discuss their work, fitting into new situations is made easier thanks to good communication skills. It is always recomended to plan that transition after a three year Montessori cycle.

  • How far in advance may I submit an application?

Parents are encouraged to apply as early as possible.

  • Is there a sibling discount?

Yes, there is a 5% tuition discount for the second child.

  • What safety precautions are in place?

This is an important questions and one you should ask of any school. We employ tools that are very effective for keepuing children as safe as possible in a childcare setting which include:

    • Background checks for all employees
    • CPR and first aid trained
    • AED and LifeVac onsite
    • Access control of all of our entrances
    • Comprehensive emergenccy plans reviewed and updated annually
    • Fire and tornado drill practices
    • Internal lockdown drill practices for our staff
